IVECO BUS has delivered twenty-nine E-WAY electric buses to ATM S.p.A., the public transport operator in Messina, marking a further step in the city’s transition towards zero-emission mobility. The delivery forms part of a broader fifty-four-vehicle procurement under the Consip framework agreement. The first units supplied include 9.5-metre and 12-metre E-WAY models configured for depot charging. The standard 12-metre version is additionally equipped for pantograph charging.
The remaining vehicles, currently in production, will consist of twelve 18-metre articulated E-WAY buses, all fitted with pantograph charging systems.
The new buses are equipped with the latest generation of Intelligent Transport Systems. These systems enable real-time fleet monitoring, support operational planning and allow precise performance management. Developed to meet the operational needs of Messina, the vehicles offer a zero-emission solution designed to combine performance and sustainability.
On board, passenger information systems aim to improve comfort and enhance the travel experience. The vehicles are also fitted with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, contributing to safety for drivers, passengers and other road users. Accessibility has been addressed through the inclusion of a dedicated wheelchair area and a boarding ramp to facilitate access for all users.
With the entry into service of the new E-WAY buses, ATM Messina continues the renewal of its fleet. The operator links the investment to improved air quality, reduced noise levels and greater passenger comfort. The procurement forms part of a long-term strategy focused on modernising the network and supporting the transition towards more sustainable and innovative urban mobility.
Giorgio Zino, Head of IVECO BUS Commercial Operations in Europe, described the delivery as a significant milestone in Messina’s energy transition. He highlighted the integration of advanced technologies designed to optimise fleet management while maintaining high standards of safety, performance and passenger comfort.
Carla Grillo, President of ATM, pointed to decisions taken as early as 2020 in cooperation with the City of Messina as the foundation for the operator’s expanding electric fleet. She noted that the company is progressing along the path of ecological transition at a pace exceeding the national average, according to the latest ASSTRA report.
Further expansion is already planned. By June 2026, eighteen additional electric buses are scheduled for delivery. These will include twelve articulated vehicles primarily assigned to the Shuttle line and six eight-metre buses.
