Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands has ordered over fifty electrically powered MAN Lion’s City E buses. The first units will be put into service mid-2025. By deploying the buses, the airport is increasing the capacity and efficiency of passenger transport between aircraft and terminal. The purchase is the result of an extensive tender process, in which the emission-free nature of the Lion’s City E fits in perfectly with Schiphol’s environmental ambitions.
One of the reasons Schiphol Airport has chosen for the MAN Lion’s City E is according to MAN "the smart spatial concept of the Lion’s City E". With three doors and a low floor boarding becomes easier and faster. In addition, the Lion’s City E offers a minimum number of seats and a maximum number of standing places for passengers with hand luggage. Schiphol aims to be energy neutral by 2030. This means that all its own activities and ground operations on the take-off and landing area will no longer produce any emissions. Sybren Hahn, Executive Director Infrastructure Schiphol about the purchase of the Lion’s City E buses: “Schiphol has a fully electric bus fleet
at Schiphol for ten years. In the coming years, bus transport will remain very important due to increasingly larger aircraft and several large-scale renovations.” The MAN Lion’s City E modular battery concept is the linchpin, with the bus configured in such a way that the battery pack matches its use and deployment for Schiphol. Thanks to the option of removing one or more battery packs, charging times are reduced and extra space is created for passengers and their luggage. The batteries of the Lion’s City E can be charged in 2.5 to 5 hours.
