Van Hool introduces worlds first electric double-decker coach

16 November 2021

To mark the anniversary of the Van Hool double-decker coach, celebrating its 40'th birthday, the Belgium company introduces an electric double-decker, the TDX25E. It is exactly one year ago Van Hool shipped the first 100% electric coach, the CX45E, to the US. The Belgium company claims it has manufactured the first 100% battery electric double-deck coach for the long distance, the TDX25E, in the world.

Of the CX45E, Van Hool's first 100% battery electric coach for the US-market, Van Hool has sold already 22 units. Over the past few decades Van Hool has built more than 1,200 vehicles with an electrical drive system (hydrogen, trolley, battery and hybrid). Both the CX45E and the brand new TDX25E use the similar electrical components, including a Siemens power train (ELFA II 360 kW) and Proterra batteries (E2 676 kWh). Filip Van Hool, CEO of Van Hool: “American customers reacted very enthusiastically to the driving experiences with our first battery electric coach, the CX45E. This prompted us to quickly set to work on developing a battery electric

double-deck, which has a higher passenger capacity. Our experience with electrical drive systems in the past, and recently with the CX45E, helped us with the rapid development and comprehensive testing of the newest Van Hool electric double-decker, the TDX25E.” In the US Van Hool has a partnership with distributor ABC Bus Companies, Inc. A partnership that originated 34 years ago. Today there are more than 11,000 Van Hool coaches and buses on North American roads serving many customers, including a number of large Silicon Valley companies who organise shuttles for their employees. “Due to demand from several customers for fully electrically driven vehicles, we at Van Hool now provide a solution”, concluded Filip Van Hool.

Van Hool, turning 75 years old in 2022, produces double-deck coaches since 1982. Twenty-five years later – in 2007 – the first double-deckers were shipped to the US. “Now, 15 years later, we are launching the first 100% battery electric double-deck coach on the US market, our second home market. Globally, Van Hool has sold more than 3,000 units in 19 different countries.”
