Two years ago at Busworld 2023 VDL Bus & Coach showcased a mock-up of the new Futura coach of the third generation. Now at Busworld 2025 it is fulfilling its promise and under the MOVE.TOGETHER flag, it proudly presents the new VDL Futura 3. And, it captured its first price: the new Futura 3 has won the "Design Award" at the Busworld Awards in the category Coach. With the new design enhancing the aerodynamics and new driveline, VDL stipulates that the Futura 3 will use 15% less fuel.
The new Futura3 is the first new product and the official launch of the entirely new bus company VDL Bus Group. It is the new combination of VDL Bus & Coach and VDL Van Hool and can be found in hall 5 at booth 504b. The launch of the third-generation VDL Futura is a particular highlight at Busworld, as it is presented to the general public for the first time.
In relation to the "old" Futura the front is characterized by the curved, convex windshield for improved aerodynamics and the rear features a sharp (Edge) design, which also benefits the aerodynamics. The EU General Safety Regulation (GSR) directive have prompted VDL to create a completely new platform for the Futura, with a modular powertrain architecture suitable for various drivelines. Initially, the Futura will be launched with a diesel engine, consisting of a DAF MX11 Gen 3 with 330 kW and a torque of 2350 Nm. The gearbox is the Traxon 2, the Axle ratio 2.00. All in all, VDL states that the Futura 3 will consume 15% less fuel.
Enhanced interior
The new coach features a completely new interior concept. Passengers will be seated on VDL Class 300 seats with a sideways sliding frame for seats on the aisle. The climate system is the VDL Extreme (39 kW) with Eberspächer AC136 climate unit. The driver enjoys an optimised driver environment with improved sight lines, intuitive controls an digital support; an updated exterior design that enhances aerodynamics; advanced safety and assistance systems.
The driver will be able to enjoy a new cockpit with a completely redesigned instrument panel, new GSR-compliant driver assistance systems - the latest generation of ADAS driving -, improved sightlines and new front crash protection. He will be able to benefit from the Mirror Replacement System (Camera Monitoring) for Class II & IV and a corner eye blindspot camera.
"We are proud of our employees who showed their craftsmanship during the development as well as the production of this new flagship," said Marc van Doorn, Managing Director Coach of VDL Bus Group during the presentation of the VDL Futura 3 in Brussels. " We are confident that this third generation of VDL Futura coaches will offer our customers, their passengers and their drivers an optimal travel experience."
