Around the world, autonomous buses are already part of daily operations. In Asia, the Middle East and parts of North America, driverless vehicles operate at scale, supported by years of real-world data.
At Busworld Europe 2025, the message was clear: the technology is no longer the bottleneck. Level 4 autonomous systems are operational today, continuously improving and increasingly capable of human-like driving behaviour.
So why does Europe look different?
The discussion has shifted from sensors and software to regulation, liability and passenger acceptance. Removing the driver from the front seat remains a visible and sensitive step, even as the underlying technology matures.
That is why Europe’s first concrete applications are emerging away from public streets, in controlled environments such as depots, where autonomous buses already perform complex manoeuvres without drivers and deliver immediate operational value.
